Beiderbeckes Bistro

Wednesday 30 May 2018

Earlier in the month my parents came to stay for the weekend and asked us to book dinner at the last minute, we tried a few places on our 'list' (yes, we do have a growing list of places we hear have vegan options to try!) and ended up with a table at Beiderbeckes in Hawkhill for the Saturday night.

Beiderbeckes Bistro has quite a retro feel, with eclectic decor and cosy lighting. It did feel a little odd being in what felt like a night-time environment on such a sunny evening as we almost expected it to be dark when we left! There is a separate section on the menu with four vegan options as mains, I had 'Brooklyn Heights' and David ordered 'Coral Bay'. Brooklyn Heights was a grilled veggie patty topped with peppers and mushrooms in BBQ sauce, which came with chips, salad and onion rings, for me it was a lot of food! I do kind of wish I'd had what David had once I saw it - a sweet and sour stir fry which also came with lots on the side. We did all enjoy our meals, and would easily describe the menu as comfort food!

We did ask a few questions about cocktail ingredients and dessert options which the staff had to check for us but were very friendly and happy to help answer. The cocktails were good value and we had some very summery One O'Clock Jump (like a Pina Colada) and Midnight in Paris to share. Dessert on the other hand was just sorbet which was a shame as the non vegan options sounded a lot more exciting. It'd be great to see one of them veganised in future!

6 Ice Cream Spots around #SunnyDundee

Wednesday 23 May 2018

Visocchi's
We've been enjoying all the lovely sunshine recently (read about #SunnyDundee here), so we felt inspired to round up a selection of places in and around Dundee where you can enjoy some vegan ice cream, sorbets and sweet treats. Yum!

1. Beans & Berries - Dundee
70 Commercial Street, DD1 2AP
Flavours change but usually include mango, raspberry and coconut. If you fancy a more substantial treat then try the vegan pancakes with fruit and ice cream, which we reviewed here.

2. Cordially Cake - Dundee (now closed)
80 Nethergate, DD1 4ER
Dairy free ice cream can be enjoyed in delicious ice cream floats and milkshakes which are blended with homemade syrups in an exciting selection of flavours. Find out more here.

3. Jannettas Gelateria - St Andrews
31 South Street, KY16 9QR
You'll find queues out onto the street at the first hint of sunshine but it's worth it. Jannettas offers a fab selection of vegan friendly sorbets. On our last visit this included passion fruit, mango, elderflower, raspberry, Irn Bru, cocoa, lemon and apricot! Look out for Jannettas sorbets at cafes in nearby towns too.
Jannettas
4. Redberry - Dundee
5 Crichton Street, DD1 3AP
Strawberry and banana dairy free ice creams are usually available - you can also order on Just Eat!

5. Tartan Coffee House - Dundee

53A Perth Road, DD1 4HY
Banana, raspberry ripple and bubblegum are some of the flavours you might find here. Available as sundaes and thick shakes which can be topped with vegan whipped cream!

6. Visocchi's - Broughty Ferry
40 Gray Street, DD5 2BJ
We heard there was vegan ice cream here so we popped by on a sunny Saturday afternoon. It was super busy so a lot of flavours seemed to be sold out but they had yummy Irn Bru and raspberry sorbet.

Let us know if we've missed your favourite so we can check it out!
