Pillars of Hercules

Wednesday 25 April 2018

As we lived in Falkland for three years, Pillars of Hercules was our favourite place for a weekend treat. We used to walk to the end of the village to the Falkland Estate then through the woods with the reward of coffee and cake waiting for us at the other end! Since we were spending the week in Fife we thought it'd be the perfect chance to pop back and write up a review.

It was such a lovely sunny day when we arrived for lunch and even though it was midweek we were lucky to get a table. There are a few indoor seats but most are outside under covered areas with extra benches in the 'Strawberry Field'. I chose the Pillars bean burger which came with a huge, colourful side salad and a ramekin of spiced chutney and my Mum decided to have the soup, mixed vegetable that day, and a hummus chutney toastie. The portions were generous, we especially liked the side salads which had a lovely mix of leaves and seeds for a tasty flavour combination. We didn't have time for cake but I noticed there was some yummy looking gingerbread sponge. Pillars of Hercules cafe uses all organic ingredients and as much of their own grown salads and vegetables as possible. As well as their popular cafe they have a very well stocked shop with local produce and a fab selection of wholefoods, household products, spices, flours, drinks and chocolate!

Cocoa Tree

Wednesday 18 April 2018

While spending the week in Fife, where I used to live, I knew I wanted to pop back to the Cocoa Tree in Pittenweem for a famous hot chocolate. Traditional chocolate shop at the front and cosy cafe at the back, we ended up visiting at lunch time so I was curious to find out what vegan options would be available.

Vegan options were labelled on the menu but there weren't many - soup or one sandwich option. For some reason the focaccia which comes with the soup wasn't vegan. I chose the thick mixed bean soup which is made with cocoa butter and had cocoa nibs in it! It was a little rich for me but very wholesome - a good, hearty option for a colder day.

We ordered hot chocolates for after but there was a mix up so they came at the same time as our food. You can choose from orange, rose, peppermint or hazelnut praline. I had the hazelnut which was delicious, like a molten Nutella drink! My Mum had the peppermint which she enjoyed very much. These came with cute little sea creature shaped dark chocolates too. Yum! Although the Cocoa Tree is a little pricey the hot chocolates are definitely worth it as a treat and are available to takeaway if you fancy one for a walk down to the pretty harbour.

Wee Mexico

Wednesday 11 April 2018

After a wee while without a proper catch up we decided to grab a bite to eat at one of our favourite places for vegan food in Dundee, Wee Mexico.  Neither of us had eaten much so we were in need of something super filling to keep us going and what's better than massive portions of vegan Mexican food?

Wee Mexico has a fantastic choice and pretty much anything on the menu can be made vegan.  I opted for my favourite; vegan great fries, topped with; vegan chicken, spring onions, tomatoes, sour cream and guacamole - it was delicious.  We decided to sit in with our food rather than take it home which meant it was really fresh and delicious. The vegan chicken was a little on the spicy side but if you prefer yours milder just let the staff know!

Jilly went for the vegan nachos with vegan beef, I would definitely recommend the vegan beef- it's perfect with nachos, fries or in a burrito.  Wee Mexico is the perfect lunch spot if you're in the centre of town and they deliver too! This is a fantastic eatery and knowing you can have so many options makes ordering a takeaway or eating in an absolute delight.

We were there with my little vegan and although there was no ramp the staff offered to help take the pram upstairs but it was no hassle to carry it up.  There were no changing facilities but as a little place this was expected and DCA has facilities just up the road if needed! Wee Mexico is a vegan gem and we can’t wait to head back soon.
